A 5-kilo Plate Of Sushi And A 10-kilo Ramen Bowl

Dinner: Japanese take-out and a bottle of tea from the vending machine

There was one evening  during our holiday in Ginza that my husband and I decided to take food out from one of the stalls  in Matsuzakaya.

Gyoza --- pan-fried Japanese dumpling stuffed with shrimp, vegetables and/or pork served with ginger mixed in soy sauce and vinegar. Mmm...

It sounded like a good idea as it was pouring constantly that day and our coat and shoes were already drenched.

Chilly October rain

With my feet propped up in a nice, cozy hotel room with the rain pouring outside, we decided to watch TV.  Turns out we got lucky as we came across a food contest that had us falling off our seats.  Unfortunately, neither one of us could understand the characters on the screen or what the host was saying.  We couldn’t even figure out the name of the show which is why we just took screen shots of the TV.

Luckily, Japanese shows are very animated and visual.

On the left is a normal-sized nigiri sushi. On the right is the day's gastronomic challenge consisting of tuna, egg, fish roe, squid and octopus :D

From what we could gather, there were two groups of contestants racing to finish this gargantuan 5.2 kilo culinary concoction.

A tub of fish roe on rice

Raw octopus --- is it still moving?

A big round of applause for this brave soul!

I enjoy the little box on the upper right corner where they usually feature people’s facial reactions:)

The other group of contestants had a different challenge.

Itadakimasu!

Bon apetit!

  1. That is an excellent idea…thank you! I see a dinner with onigiri, sautéed shrimp and kimchi soup. Yummy! :)

I can start out with this and work my way toward the more mouthwatering and delectable sushi that my family and I crave so very often.

  2. I would fling myself wholeheartedly into a sushi eating contest. It is the most exquisite food my palate has ever chanced to meet. Octopi, eel, tuna, and all the like, with roe, rice, seaweed and hot sauce–—Oh, dear I’m making myself drool just looking at the photos and thinking I must have sushi for dinner tonight!

      • Another sushi lover :)

Actually sushi is not that easily found here. We have 1 Japanese restaurant that offers a sushi bar and take out. Otherwise, we have to drive up to an hour, sometimes more in horrid traffic, traverse shoulder to shoulder almost through the largest mall there, to the only other Japanese restaurant with sushi.

I have been reading and talking to others about making it at home; however, I must admit I haven’t gotten up the nerve to try it just yet.

      • Oh my. Sorry to hear about the production number just to get sushi/sashimi :( If you don’t feel like working with raw fish yet, how about making onigiri (rice ball with cooked stuffing inside) or a kim bap? It’s a Korean maki but everything inside is cooked. But of course that defeats the purpose if what you’re craving is some melt-in-your mouth, buttery and raw seafood :D Mmmm. Argh, I’m getting hungry just talking about it! :p
