This is perhaps one of the few acrylic works I’ve done in the past, sometime in 2004. It’s a medium I find more difficult than oil and watercolors so I’ve stopped working with it altogether.
I thought I’d share this on the blog today because it’s something we see all the time, hanging in our dining nook here in Singapore. Even back home in Manila, I get all sorts of remarks about it:
“That painting is creepy — it’s like a dragon ate people”
“Are people burning in that painting?”
“So trippy… what was going on in your mind?”
REALLY?
Well that’s just cool.
Because the original title of this painting is “Hands To Heaven” and I thought of people reaching out for the good and all things happy while making this.
I think it’s a great experiment on perspective and it’s pretty fun that people actually have funky opinions about this, whether they like the painting or not.
Would love to hear your two cents on this, shall you have something to share

I started out with watercolors and oils and switched to acrylics. They drove me nutty at first. It took me awhile to get used to acrylics and now I love them. Take some of your watercolor skills and apply them to acryics: working in layers, with glazes…..A bonus: you can paint on things like furniture, shoes and clothing with acrylics.
What I loved about it is the colors can be very bold! It actually worked for me when painting fabrics. But I’d like to get some wispy, almost transparent effects without it looking too flat/dull when mixed with water. Any solvents I need to use to slow down the drying process nicely?
I’m not aware of any solvents you can use with acrylcs to slow down the drying time. With acrylics, I mix the colors on the palette first. This might help. It’s a switch from watercolors where you put the layers on the painting and let the colors mix themselves.
I find it interesting that you found acrylics “more difficult”. Oils, watercolours and acrylics are all different and you get different effects. Do I take it you mean you didn’t get the final effect that you wanted?
I guess the challenge for me was the handling of the consistency. How to move the colors around like oil pastels and oil paints. Watercolors can run, which I like. Acrylics dried faster on its own without the retarding agents. Perhaps I should be more patient and try it out…?
I was thinking ‘a flowerpot of hands’ – I like it
Fantastic! Glad you saw that angle in the painting
If by creepy they mean cool, your friends are right.
Thank you! I think my friends have hyperactive and vivid imaginations — which is cool, too
I think it’s a beautiful piece of art! I love all the vibrant colors:)
That’s awesome, thank you! Glad it added color(s) to your day
