If there was one thing I learned after having had a cancer diagnosis in 2018, it would be this: ageing is a gift not bestowed on all. My 2019 began with a story of curveballs that resulted in a silent, dusty, idle and very empty studio. It was the year I went in remission and it was a time for healing.

Just as I was done staring at my mortality in the eye, the 2020 pandemic happened.  To say that the world and our humanity has changed since the time this work was completed is a massive understatement. One of the things that struck me was how the standards of beauty has taken a different turn at a time of immeasurable uncertainty. With the global lockdowns and businesses put on pause for months, many women around the world from all walks of life, celebrities included, had no access to salon treatments and were left to grow out their greying roots. In fact, I have a good number of friends who have decided to completely embrace their new natural look permanently.

I repainted this lady’s hair and turned it grey in honor of all the women who have opted to go natural and find joy in celebrating the privilege, grace and beauty of ageing in all its  glory.

The artist pays tribute to the woman who blooms wherever life takes her, the story she carries, and the culture that makes her heart sing. the pink in honor of those journeying through and those who live to tell their cancer story in the past tense.
