I recently had the urge to add paint and reworked this artwork by adding more gold details. This was actually completed in February 2020, back when the world had yet to learn what was in store for all of us.

Early this week, I had two profound conversations about life things, and grief. And how grief is not always synonymous to sadness, how grief is not necessarily limited to the experience of a death of a loved one, and that alone does not always equate to lonely.

From what I’ve experienced, the feeling of abysmal loss, I believe, is not a one-size-fits all and can come in so many ways. It can come in the unplanned conclusion of a long chapter in your life, or in the death of a life or a career we once knew and identified with. It happens when we’re no longer the someone-or-something-of-someone-else, it can happen when the future in which you placed your vision and hopes on dissipates, or it simply happens when the life as we knew it ceases without fanfare.

Despite the curveballs, our capacity for resilience is what I feel propels us forward, whether in inches or in miles, in lightning speed or with dragging feet. But when the clouds pass, we ought to see that there are new things to do, new recipes to experiment with, new restaurants to try, new authors to read, new-to-me music to listen to, or new-again friendships to rekindle.

I always believed that it is a gift to have the spiritual muscle to weave through adversity and the grace to find a refreshed and renewed meaning, purpose and identity, even in the old things. And that the idea is to move, onward and upward, towards a constantly shifting and evolving goal.
